Research interests

Looking at the ocean and imagining how life is maintained has, for a long time, been a subject that moved my mind. Beyond the big creatures, which can captivate the attention of most people, there is the invisible portion that sustains this entire system.

The phytoplankton is one fraction of this invisible world, floating in the water column, they have similar requirements as plants to develop, and constitute the primary source of food within the oceans. Due to their photosynthetic capability, these tiny organisms are essential for the capture of atmospheric carbon, stocking it in the oceans, and in return, releasing oxygen, and contributing almost 50% of its stock within the atmosphere. These are merely some of the features that make the phytoplankton a key element in the ecological function for all aquatic life.

During my professional career, I focused on understanding the drivers that govern the phytoplankton diversity and distribution in ecosystems.

Nowadays, I am a Post-doc collaborator in the LOMIC laboratory at Banyuls-sur-Mer Observatory, and I am currently working on the distribution of genes related to circadian clock in green algae residing within the different oceanic basins. These genes are shown to be responsible for controlling the organism’s day-night metabolism activities.  Our goal is to evaluate the relation of gene variants through a latitudinal gradient by taking advantage of global circumnavigation projects that have previously been conducted, such as the Tara Oceans expedition.

This work aims to investigate possible shifts in these populations reflecting global world changes.
